Pischke's and AutoCare Mall offer outstanding opportunities for area youth
West Salem High School
Automotive Instructor
Paul Liethen is extremely
thankful for the actions of
a couple area businesses.
Both businesses have volunteered
to take on an Automotive
Youth Apprentice
for the last 4 years.
"These businesses have
continually provided a
solid commitment to the
automotive industry and
to the youth of our area by
taking on a youth apprentice.
I would assume it isn't
the best business decision
to hire a youth apprentice,
but these students learn so
much that just can't be
taught in our shop at the
high school," said Liethen.
Mr. Jim Gross of Auto Care
Mall and Midway BP, and Mr.
Rahn Pischke of Pischke Motors
have partnered with
Liethen's youth apprenticeship
program to provide numerous
opportunities to West
Salem High School seniors
thinking about a career as an
automotive technician. As a
result, these students have
such an advantage over
other students that enter
the Automotive Program
at Western Technical
College, says
Liethen. West Salem
youth apprentice grads
that have graduated
from Western are currently
employed in this
field in businesses
throughout La Crosse,
Onalaska, and West Salem.
" I've always been impressed
with these businesses.
Sometimes the apprentice
works out, and
sometimes they don't, but
these students get a taste of
what it's like to be a technician,
by working under the
mentorship of experienced
techs" added Liethen.
"Sometimes the most valuable
experience is that the
apprentice learns that being
an automotive technician
isn't for them. Figuring
this out in high school
stops them from spending
time and money at a technical
college auto program." |
West Salem High School automotive instructor Paul Liethen was a busy man this month as he awarded Duane Dahlgren of BP (far left), Scott Kaiser and Dan Gilster of AutoCare Mall, and
Jamie Nelson of Pischke Motors plaques for their work with West Salem High School students in youth apprentice programs.
